Psychologist, Erik Erikson's Psychosocial Theory of Personality - 8 Stages of Human Development, offer a compassionate approach for us to consider as we continuously seek to define and affirm ourselves and our children.
The Adolescence Stage (ages 12-21) is probably one of the most challenging of all. This phase in the lives of our youth is all about Idenity. During this phase of life we seek answers to personal inquiries such as: Who am I? What do I want? Where do I belong? This is the stage in our lives that social acceptance is more important than what mom or dad want for me. During this stage, one's sense of self is determined by his/her ability to create healthy boundaries and make self-honoring, self-supportive, self-loving choices. Each youngster vacillates between leader and follower as he/she experiences "life" and moves through the challenges of "growing up." He or she may experiment, rebel, or test the waters to see how many boundaries they can cross. This is the phase that they desire independence, yet they are not quite ready to give up their dependence.
Everyone over the age of 21 has experienced The Adolescence Stage of development. Our individual psyches consist of beliefs, thoughts perceptions and intentions. Our experiences and interpretations have a direct impact on how we identify ourselves as we develop into adulthood and what we do, feel and think in our adult lives.
It takes a village to raise a child, but what happens when the village is unconsciously functioning in dysfunction. What happens when, as adults (parents, educators, community leaders, etc.), we begin to move through our lives with emphasis on unanswered inquiries from the Adolescent Stage?
As adults, remembering and healing from our challenges between the ages of 12-21 can be self-gratifying and can be an asset and a guide for today's youth.
As an Empowered Parents and Empowered Youth, we can begin the process of recapturing, revitalizing and reclaiming the village. When adults communicate in a way that kids will listen and listen in order to hear the youth, we will come present to the fact that we REALLY ARE SAYING THE SAME THING.
