Summer Opportunities - Don't Wait til Summer to look
The following is a sampling of some of the many opportunities that may
be available to motivated and talented young people. Go on-line or call

1) National Bar Assoc's Crump Law Camp www.nationalbar.org (301) 249-8355
July 6th - July 19th
* High school students entering the 9th, 10th & 11th grades in the fall
are welcome to apply for a FREE or depending on family income, greatly
reduced Law Camp to be held in Washington, DC, at Howard University
School of Law. The Crump Law Camp will have an open enrollment policy but is
geared towards enabling low-income students of color. All students
entering the 9th, 10th & 11th grades in the fall are welcome to apply.
This s a wonderful opportunity to get a taste for the rigors of law school
as well as a wonderful opportunity to visit Washington, DC. Requests for

2) Summer Search www.summersearch.org (718) 923-5781
* The mission of Summer Search is to identify low-income high school
youth who demonstrate resiliency in overcoming hardship and the desire to help
others. Nurturing those qualities over time in students who have often
been neglected allows them to become empowered future everyday leaders. Our
ambitious mission is accomplished through a program that combines full
scholarships to summer experiential education programs with intensive
long-term mentoring. Students should be sophomores in high school and
be nominated by teachers in or to be granted an interview. Interviews are
held from January through March.

* Founded in 1978 as Summerbridge, the Breakthrough Collaborative is a
national educational program that provides a path to college for
high-potential, low-income middle-school students in 25 communities
throughout the U.S. Breakthrough's innovative Students Teaching Students
model partners middle-school students with college and high school
students who serve as teachers, role models and mentors, providing real-life
examples that it's 'cool to be smart'.
4) Teak Fellowship www.teakfellowship.org (212) 288-6678
* TEAK is a program that helps economically disadvantaged but
intellectually gifted New York City students gain access to and succeed
at op public, parochial, and independent high schools. The Fellowship
provides these young people with opportunities equal to those of their
better-off peers, encourages them to give something back to society, and
provides them with a safe and fun place they can call their own through
after-school, weekend, and summer programs.
5) Make The Road by Walking www.maketheroad.org
* The Youth Power Project works with community residents aged 5 - 19
and offers a variety of year-round and summer programs. Activities include:
poetry writing, performing arts, radio documentary production, computer
skills training, mural-making, and photography.

* The NYC Mission Society has an education program that teaches both
life skills and academics to students aged 5 - 14 throughout the summer and
school year. There is also the option of a sleep-away camp.

* Grand Street Settlement offers an array of programs and services that
help young students succeed in school, cope with the daily challenges of
growing up, and obtain the skills, training, and support to realize
their hopes and dreams.

* The Fresh Air Fund has Summer Camps and Home-stays available, as well
as a new Career Awareness Program. Students apply in the Spring of their
6th grade.

* The Girls Quest offers 2-week camp sessions for girls on a 400-acre
lakefront campus in Winham, NY: "Our philosophy is simple,
non-competitive, small-group living in a very back to basics
environment."

* The Youth Mural Project lets you strengthen and decorate neighborhoods that need help. You learn about visual art and create beautiful murals that will be seen for years.
11) Double Discovery www.doublediscovery.org (212) 854 - 3897
* Talent Search serves students in grades 7 - 12 who seek help in
preparing for high school entrance, high school graduation, and college
enrollment. The program runs for four weeks during the summer, and
eight weeks during the academic year.
12) The Boys Club of New York www.bcny.org (212) 677 - 1108
* The residential summer school provides over 100 rising 6th, 7th, and
8th grade boys with the opportunity to increase their English, math,
science, and social studies, Spanish and computer skills while promoting greater
confidence and strong self-image in each of the participants.

* Girls Inc. offers a variety of programs for girls in middle school.
They include: science, math, economic literacy, prevention of teen
pregnancy, media literacy, substance abuse, and women's leadership.

* Educational and recreational activities are open to students from
East and Central Harlem. There is a summer camp in East Hampton and a
performing arts conservatory camp on the regular campus.

* Sadie Nash Leadership Project offers an inspiring learning experience
within a powerful community of young female leaders. Some of these
leaders already know they will change the world; others are still realizing it.
We believe that in order for leadership to be different tomorrow, we need
to equip, empower and strengthen young women today. Sadie Nash promotes
leadership, service and activism among young women in high school
through the summer institute, community action placements and leadership action projects. This program is open to young high school women (age 14-18)
attending high school in New York City. Applications are accepted in
the Spring.
16) Groundwork High School Program www.groundworkinc.org (718) 346-2200
* Groundwork is actively seeking 8th graders who are interested in a
college prep program. Application deadline is April 1st.
* Groundwork for Success is a youth employment, business education, and
leadership development program for young adults ages 16 to 20 in the
campuses served by Groundwork for Youth. Participants hold paid
employment with Groundwork for three days a week and participate in peer support
groups, college admissions counseling, and leadership training one day a
week. Students also attend a free college tour each year.

*The SEO Scholars Program provides motivated New York City public high
school students of color with the academic enrichment, college guidance
and leadership development needed to gain admission to, and succeed at,
selective colleges and universities. The SEO Scholars Program provides
services and support in grades "9 through 16," helping students succeed
throughout the eight-year span of high school and college. With our
services, we can improve the quality of a New York City public school
education, helping urban public schools to provide services and guidance
on par with suburban schools.

* Liberty Leads is a leadership and college preparatory program that
provides academic and entrepreneurial enrichment opportunities. Liberty
Leads prepares students to become competitive applicants to highly
selective colleges and universities by offering academically rigorous
experiences, culturally enriching activities and supporting
participants' social and personal development. Over the course of the school year,
scholars participate in after-school electives, Saturday classes,
leadership retreats, community service projects and college tours.
During the first summer, scholars attend an intensive, residential, three-week
institute. During the following two summers, scholars travel abroad,
attend college programs for high school students, enroll in leadership
and community service programs, and participate in internships.
